Chautauqua Lake Association Details Financial Challenges at 2012 Annual Meeting

The Chautauqua Lake Association’s financial challenges were presented in detail by board members at their Annual Dinner Meeting on Monday June 25th at the Lakewood Rod and Gun Club. The CLA serves the community by being the “steward” of Chautauqua Lake with weed harvesting, shoreline clean-up, scientific monitoring, public education and debris removal. The group has recently been dealing with serious financial shortfalls in a year where lake conditions are considerably less than ideal for lake home owners and tourists. County Health Department Urges Lake Users To Be Cautious

MAYVILLE, NY - The mild winter and higher than normal temperatures has made summer bloom early throughout the region, unfortunately this includes an early bloom of nuisance aquatic weeds and algae in our lakes. The Chautauqua County Health Department urges all residents to be cautious when recreating in our area lakes, especially if weeds or algae are present. Weeds can restrict swimmer's movements that can be dangerous, especially for beginner swimmers and children. Chautauqua Lake Association Grateful to Senator Young for Allocation for Lake Cleanup Efforts

Members of the Chautauqua Lake Association (CLA) were happy and grateful to hear of Senator Catharine Young's (R,C,I-Olean) announcement last week that she has secured $50,000 in the 2012-13 state budget for Chautauqua Lake cleanup efforts. The grant will be allocated to the CLA for weed control under the invasive species program. Cummins Inc, Jamestown Engine Plant Employees Recognized for Lake Clean-Up

Facing challenging summer conditions and significant government funding cuts, the Chautauqua Lake Association was able to harvest over 3,700 tons of nuisance weeds from Chautauqua Lake in 2011. The success of the lake shoreline clean-up was due in large measure to Cummins Jamestown Engine Plant (JEP) employees who volunteered 4-hour shifts to clean-up shoreline weed concentration for transport by CLA barges and trucks to area composting locations. More than 900 hours of employee volunteer time supplemented two CLA shoreline crews responsible for 44 miles of Chautauqua Lake shoreline.
