Proceeds From Summer Boat Raffle to Benefit CLA

The Bemus Bay Pops announced that the Chautauqua Lake Association will be the beneficiary for their 2013 Crownline 21SS boat raffle this summer. Partial proceeds from the raffle will be awarded to the CLA to assist with maintenance and cleaning of nuisance aquatic vegetation on Chautauqua Lake. The raffle begins this month and will continue throughout the summer with the winning ticket being pulled on September 1 at the Aquapopsaloza event at the Bemus Bay Pops Floating Stage. Community Foundation Annual Meeting

The CLA participated in the Community Foundation's Annual Meeting on Wednesday, June 19, by hosting an exhibit in their dining room. It was their 35th Anniversary of “Caring for Chautauqua County.” Doug Conroe, President of the CLA, and his wife Jane from the Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy were there along with other staff to work our exhibit which featured a truckload of weeds on display. The Community Foundation has helped the CLA over the years with funding for capital projects and this year they were able to help us with our annual lake maintenance operations ($15,000). CLA Warns Boaters of Lake Debris

The 2013 wind and rainfall totals have been noticeably higher throughout the Chautauqua Lake region compared to other years. Tree branches, limbs and other debris have made their way to the lake as a result which has caused many boaters and lake users concern. Recent Storm Clean Up

The CLA's summer operations began on June 3rd. Due to the recent storms we were forced to stop our typical harvesting and begin storm clean up. We have removed over 150 tons of large logs, trees and brush debris from Chautauqua Lake so far. This debris is potentially dangerous to boaters and has become our first priority. We have issued urgent warnings for lake users to be cautious and aware. The CLA encourages stream bank reinforcement projects to prevent dangerous debris situations like we faced this season.
