Heather noted that algae blooms occur annually on Chautauqua Lake, though this year’s blooms started earlier than usual. The majority of the lake remains safe for recreation.

If you observe a bloom: Report it to the CLA (716-763-8602 or info@chautauqualakeassociation.org) or to NYSDEC. Include the date and time, the bloom’s exact location, its size relative to that part of the lake, a description (color, texture, density, presence of scum), and your contact information. A photo is appreciated when possible.
