The Post-Journal reported on September 1 that the town of Ellery is backing a county grant application to dredge a portion of Bemus Creek, a tributary that feeds into Chautauqua Lake that has been prone to flooding and sediment buildup in recent years. The proposed project, estimated at $400,000, would address sediment and debris that has accumulated near the creek’s delta and outlet, work tied to the county’s 2026 Bemus Creek Sediment and Debris Management Plan. If approved, dredging would take place in 2028.
At the same meeting, John Ford, representing the CLA, thanked Ellery Town Board members for their support this year. Board member Mark Schlemmer credited the CLA’s efforts in Bemus Bay, with board members agreeing the lake has been much better this year.
