Seven Large Truckloads Collected in First Week
Lakewood, NY — CLA Executive Director Douglas Conroe reports that pre-season pickup of debris from Chautauqua Lake started last week. Crews worked both sides of the lake: in the southern basin to the I-86 bridge and north of the bridge along the eastern shore into Dewittville Bay.
Seven large truckloads of debris were retrieved along the Long Point, Lakewood, and Camp Chautauqua areas in the first week of collection. Conroe noted, “This annual clean-up serves a valuable function in readying the lake for Memorial Day’s anticipated high use by boaters. We thank our Annual Fund Drive supporters for making this service possible.”
Annually, the CLA provides safe waterways for lake users by removing and clearing clogged navigational lanes, as well as offering a unique shoreline service that assists lakefront owners with the burden of cleaning their shorelines. All debris collected is transported to the County Landfill.
Shorelines located within conservation areas are left undisturbed in order to protect and allow the aquatic life habitat to naturally evolve.
This week, CLA crews will continue with the remainder of the northern basin of Chautauqua Lake. Additional crews will be on hand staring May 24 to address the short lived curly-leaf pondweed. The full fleet is anticipated to start mid-to-late June.
