Reflecting Back on More Than 33 Years of Dedicated Service to Chautauqua Lake
Paul W. Swanson, who passed away on Monday, Jan. 30, 2023, was a dedicated colleague and friend to many in the Chautauqua Lake community. He was an avid boater and enriched the lives of many with his deep knowledge of the Lake.
For more 33 years, Paul served in a number of roles at the Chautauqua Lake Association including mechanic and General Manager, where he worked with great diligence to keep the lake safe for all to enjoy.
Around the shop, Paul was considered “the best boss ever” and knew everything that was happening. He had eyes everywhere and always offered an ear when someone needed advice. He was a mentor to many and will be remembered for being a dedicated long-term manager.
At the time of his retirement in 2015, Paul had received accolades from the NYS Assembly, NYS Senate, and US Congress. He also earned the NYS Federation of Lake Association’s Lake Steward Award following the emergency cleanup efforts brought forth by the lake-wide carp die-off.

His experience and thoughtful diligence toward the betterment of Chautauqua Lake will be missed. If you had the honor of working with Paul in the summer on the lake please share your favorite memory.
